What is Biblical Discipleship?
Learning and Maturing together to be like Jesus!

Jesus told His disciples to GO and make Disciples (Matthew 28:18-20)!

Discipleship involves Community
Discipleship does not take place in isolation from others.  The very nature of discipleship assumes that at a minimum, two individuals are involved in this process.

Discipleship involves Teaching & Accountability
The word disciple is defined as “a follower or student of a teacher.”  The disciples were called to follow and surrender their lives to Jesus!  (This is where all discipleship must start – by each individual surrendering his/her all to Jesus and following Him!) (Luke 14:25-33)  The disciples were students of Jesus’ teaching and accountable to Him.  They were then commissioned by Jesus to “go and make disciples”- to be “overseers” and teachers to others in the same way they had been taught by Jesus.  The same should be true with discipleship in the church today.  The apostle Paul said it well when he said, “Follow me as I follow the example of Christ.” (1 Corinthians 11:1) (Ephesians 4:11-16; Acts 20:28; Hebrews 13:17; 1 Peter 5:1-4; Philippians 1:1; Galatians 6:1-3; James 5:16; 1 Thessalonians 5:11-14; Luke 17:3)

Discipleship involves Intentionality
Discipleship doesn’t happen by accident.  It is intentional. (Luke 9:23)

Discipleship involves Spirituality
By this we simply mean being together with others in fellowship, worship, prayer, confession and in the study of the Word of God.  (Colossians 3:15-16, Acts 2:46-47; 2 Timothy 3:16-17)

Discipleship involves Humility
We are all in need of restoration, spiritual growth and accountability!  There is no room for pride or a “know it all” or condescending attitude toward others in discipleship.  Both the teacher and student are still learning and growing together in Christ!  (Ephesians4:2; Philippians 2:3; Romans 12:16; 1 Peter 3:8)

Discipleship involves Transformation
Discipleship is not simply a support group, but a life-change group that challenges each person to grow and mature in Christ! (Romans 12:1-2)  True transformation comes through the Word of God and the teaching of the Holy Spirit! (1 John 2:24-27; John 14:26; Hebrews 4:12)
